September 23, 2018 - The National Centre for Birds of Prey

I love having a birthday traveling because I get to choose what we do that day. We were near the National Centre for Birds of Prey and it was a must-see on my list so despite rain, off we went.

September 23, 2018 — Day 20 (Sunday and my birthday)

Relaxed start to the day since church didn’t begin until 9:00. About 8:30 and armed with better directions than when searching yesterday, we set off in search of the elusive church and found it. It’s small and hidden between two houses, but there it was. Small church, small congregation and no children at all so it won't be here in a generation. They were welcoming and friendly and had a good organist. We forgot our Tilley hats when we left and were grabbed on the way out and our hats returned . . . thank goodness. We lost the previous hats in France.

We stopped for hot chocolate on the way back since it was really cold. I opened my gifts. Ed got me a hawk video and Jean sent a Kindle book to my Kindle, “Café d’Oc” about the Dordogne, one of my favorite parts of France. Got a couple ecards and some donations to my Facebook fund-raiser for Doctors Without Borders . . . including David Zimet, bless his heart. Then we walked around Helmsley exploring. It’s a very cute village.

When noon arrived we returned to our hotel for their Sunday Roast, our favorite British tradition. Ed got beef and I got lamb. Fortunately you could choose a smaller serving so we had room for dessert . . . cheesecake and chocolate cake respectively. Very good. The Royal Oak Hotel is not only perfectly located on the Market Square, it is comfortable, friendly and has a very nice restaurant.

After lunch we drove to the National Centre for Birds of Prey and arrived in time for the two o’clock flying demonstration. Great fun. Afterwards we walked around the aviaries enjoying the birds until it started to rain pretty heavily. Retreated to the Owl Café for tea and hot chocolate until the rain stopped then resumed our aviary tour until time for the 4:15 flying show. One of the birds sat nearly in my lap and I got some great pictures. Sun is out again. Very good Alec. I didn't catch that one. Love your sense of humour. I absolutely love birds so it couldn't have been a more perfect day . . . well, I could have skipped the rain.

Hi Irene. It was a wonderful day. My birthdays always are. It's always nice enough I don't mind adding a year . . . ;)

I love these Birds of Prey centres. We went to one in Bedfordshire last year and did their falconry experience so we got to handle some of the birds. It would make a great present if you're in the UK for a future birthday - you could drop a hint to Ed!

Hi Sarah. Thanks for visiting. On my birthday I don't drop hints, I make a specific request and it's usually honored. Actually handling the birds would be a real thrill. I had a bird as a pet growing up thanks to an indulgent grandfather. I've loved them every since. One of my biggest thrills was persuading a wild sparrow to sit on my finger once. Patience . . .

Hi Sally - yes, I usually do more than just hint these days If you're heading back to the UK at any time do check out these centres for those sorts of activity/experiences - we loved it!

How nice that your birthday was on a Sunday, so you could have a traditional British lamb Sunday Roast.
