September 20, 2018 - York on the train

We took the train to York and the day started lovely and sunny but promised vicious rain. We decided to take a chance and went anyway. It worked.

York - Cholera Burial Ground

York - Cholera Burial Ground

Woke to sunshine but knew it wouldn’t last. Tropical storm Ali struck Ireland yesterday and was devastating. We won’t get that but we will get rain later today. We quickly ate and drove to the Malton railway station and got return tickets to York. The train arrived on schedule and we hopped on. It was a quick and pretty ride to York and our young seatmate walked us to the place where we crossed a bridge into Old Town. We found York Minster and tourist information following his directions and were soon entering the very large cathedral. They are doing a lot of renovation so there was scaffolding covering the organ and part of one side of the church. You have to pay to enter so we thought a construction discount would have been nice, but they haven’t thought of it. We paid and entered, wandering through the church. They are very proud of their 128 stained-glass windows but we were underwhelmed. We had bright sunshine but the windows were not particularly colorful. They had too much lead holding the tiny pieces of colored glass so all the windows seemed dull and dark. They tried to tell too much and ended up conveying nothing. We much prefer the beautiful windows at Chartres, Bourges and Notre Dame de Paris among others . . . they have bright, clear colors with stories you can follow. We did go through the Crypt and the Undercroft which was interesting. York is impressive but we didn't really have time to explore the town.

Bennett’s Restaurant where we didn't eat lunch

We departed the Minster looking for lunch and Bennett’s nearby had a good menu so we went in, were seated, divested ourselves of rain gear and then the waiter announced everything we wanted was only available after 5:30. A note on the menu would have been helpful. We apologized, put our coats back on and went out to continue our search, finally ending up at Gusto Italian Restaurant with a two-course prix fixe of sea bass. It was a very nice place with very good food and excellent service Ed got a lemon sorbet for dessert and I got a very intense tiramisu. Good choice! Walking to the Treasurer's House in the rain

Walking to the Treasurer's House in the rain

We left the restaurant to the promised rain and programmed my phone to guide us to the Treasurer’s House, a National Trust site beside the cathedral. It’s quite interesting and the docents were informative so we spent a pleasant hour there. We finally had to face the rain so hiked back to the train station in a pretty heavy rainfall. We were soaked by the time we arrived. We had a thirty-minute wait so we found a bench near our track and Ed got me a hot chocolate that helped warm me. The train arrived only three minutes late and we were off. Our stop was the first one so it didn’t take long. No photos through the rain-streaked windows . . . Arrived in jig-time, retrieved our car and drove home over quickly flooding roads. Must check the weather report tomorrow . . . and do the laundry. Sigh . . .
